Chapter Nine

He had to keep this to himself until he figured it out.

Kane rushed to the bar and down to the basement. No sense in riling anyone up about Jackie until he had more information. Like her name. Where she was from. Anything! It was no longer her choice if she wanted to talk. He would make her, no matter the cost.

Rule was standing as a sentry at the door of the small holding cell they’d installed. Now and then, a shifter needed a safe place to sleep off wild intoxication. But mostly, it was the perfect place to dish out a little street justice when needed.

“What took you so long? I’ve been calling to you for over an hour,” Rule barked. He raised a telling eyebrow. “You kept me waiting while you made out with the woman?”

Kane smirked. “Jealous?”

Rule rolled his eyes and unlocked the door. “I know you wanted to wait until he’s percolated in here a while, but I couldn’t help myself.” Together, they went inside. The young man was sitting against the wall, his knees drawn up with his arms around them. He sneered, showing no sign of fear. Impressive.

“I already said I’m not talking.” The kid spat on the floor and dipped his forehead to his knees.

With a sigh, Kane strode over and pulled the man’s head up by his hair. “I’ve been told that one too many times tonight.” His fangs dropped, the tip of one nicking his lower lip. A droplet of blood flavored his mouth, reminding him that he was hungry. Very, very hungry.

The kid recoiled, trying to pry Kane’s grip off his hair.

“This is a lot harder without your stun gun to protect you, huh?” Kane teased. “Rule and I can shred you piece by piece, and no one will notice or care.”

Rule hunkered down and grinned. He grabbed the kid’s left foot and yanked off his boot. “It’s amazing how people start talking when the skin is being peeled from their feet. Even the Ahpret aren’t immune to torture. Are they, kid?”

Kane uncurled his fingers, the tips shifting into the arched, eight-inch claws of his grizzly. He raked them over the top of the kid’s foot, digging hard enough to leave red streaks in his flesh. The kid tried to twist away but didn’t get far.

“Why are you baiting your own people?” Kane pressed a claw hard enough to draw a bubble of blood.

The kid hissed, his fangs dropping as he pulled against his bonds. Kane had never had to use forceful measures on his own kind quite like this. The fact that this young buck was working against them without guilt pissed him off to the highest level. This dumbass was going to talk, no matter how Kane had to get it out of him. He’d been tinkering with tech he stole from his unit in the war. The shock collars the government made the Ahpret wear to keep them under control were new and improved thanks to his improvements.
